Georges Mathieu

Georges Mathieu is a French painter in a lyrical abstract style.
He was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France in 1921. After painting realistic landscapes and portraits, he developed a highly distinctive personal style and he gained an international reputation in the 1950s as a leading Abstract Expressionist.
He took part in exhibitions of informal painting and contributed to the development of the informal esthetic both by his paintings and his writings.
Among his writings are "Analogie de la non-figuration" (after WWII) a note on the relation between art and Lupasco's logic of the contradictory and an article on American painting published in Art Digest .
An art theorist as well as an artist, Georges Mathieu made a name for himself as the founder of Tachism in the essay 'Au-delà du Tachisme' in the sixties.
