Lucebert, ink watercolor and gouache.
Lubertus Jacobus van Swannswijk, who took the pseudonym of Lucebert, was born in Amsterdam in 1924.
During the war he began experimenting with abstract drawing and painting and a fresh mode of poetry,
He belonged to the Dutch literary movement of De Vijftigers. They were highly influenced by the European avant-garde movement COBRA. So was Lucebert, especially in his early work. His art reflects a rather pessimistic view on the world.
Lucebert’s growing reputation as a poet culminated in his receiving the Dutch State Prize for Literature in 1967. He also continued to draw and paint throughout his life.
