Hippolyte Petitjean

This fine watercolor of the French artist was sold some days ago in Brussels.
Hippolyte Petitjean was born September 11 1854 in Macon where he studied at the local art school. Later on he moved to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He worked in the studios of Cabanel and Puvis de Chavannes, the latter leaving a lasting impression on the young painter.
Although he gave up working in divided color for some years before the turn of the century, he resumed the dot technique around 1912, when he painted luminescent watercolors.

Il reçoit une formation artistique académique à Mâcon puis une obtient une bourse de la ville pour étudier aux Beaux-Arts de Paris. Le style de Hippolyte Petitjean sera successivement académique, impressionniste, néo-impressioniste, symboliste puis pointilliste et luminariste. Mort le 18 septembre1929.
