Reclining Woman on paper, laid on card, 27 by 35 cm. "
This fine watercolor of Konstantin Somov (1869-1939) was on the open market recently.
Somov was a Russian painter in oils and watercolour, and illustrator. He was born in St Petersburg, son of Andrei Somov, Curator of the Hermitage, and studied at the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg 1888-97, from 1894 under Repin.
The characteristic style of execution suggest that it was done before Somov left Russia in 1923. At the end of 1923 Somov immigrated to the USA. He stayed in the USA for 1 year. “…my art is absolutely alien to America,” he wrote in one of his letters.
