London Souvenir.

VIEW OF GIVET, ON THE MEUSE, SOUTH OF DINANT (BELGIUM)

This recently discovered watercolour dates from 1839, it was sold for 115,250 GBP at Sotheby's London on December 4th.

The sheet of blue paper used in this formerly unknown work has been examined by Peter Bower. He has established that it was made from two blue and one white rag with the addition of some hemp.

A sketch of this site is in the "from Givet, Mézières, Verdun, Metz, Luxemburg and Trèves Sketchbook" named: "The Meuse and Hills near Givet, 1839". (the Turner Bequest) Tate Collection.

The Emperor NAPOLEON BONAPARTE visited GIVET, the Meuse was in spite and english prisonners helped him to cross the river. NAPOLEON decided the fast construction of a bridge. The English prisonners were pardonned by the Emperor.
